MECHANICAL ROYALTIES  

 

Mechanical royalties are the royalties you pay to another artist and publisher for the right to record one of their songs.  These royalties are due on all copies of a recording whether or not the work is for resale.  Some publishers will grant not-for-profit or fund-raising groups a blanket license (or waiving of the license) but generally this is rare.

 

In Canada the vast majority of publishers are handled by CMRRA (Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency) in Toronto.  The links below will help you check if a song you want or have recorded is represented by CMRRA.  You can also download the application from directly from their website.
